A Constructivist Neural Network Learns the Past Tense of English Verbs

چکیده

A constructivist neural network is presented that models the acquisition of the past tense of English verbs. The network constructs its architecture in response to the learning task, corresponding to neurobiological and psychological evidence. The model outperforms other connectionist and symbolic models in learning and in displaying psychologically realistic learning and generalization behavior. It is argued that the success of the network is due to its constructivist nature, and that the distinction between fixed architecture and constructivist models is fundamental. Given this distinction, constructivist systems constitute better models of cognitive development.

Emergent Modularity and U-Shaped Learning in a Constructivist Neural Network Learning the English Past Tense

A constructivist neural network model is presented that learns the past tense of English verbs. The model builds its architecture in response to the learning task in a way consistent with neurobiological and psychological evidence. The model outperforms existing connectionist and symbolic past tense models in terms of learning and generalization behavior, and it displays a U-shaped learning cur...

From rote learning to system building: acquiring verb morphology in children and connectionist nets.

The traditional account of the acquisition of English verb morphology supposes that a dual architecture underlies the transition from early rote-learning processes (in which past tense forms of verbs are correctly produced) to the systematic treatment of verbs (in which irregular verbs are prone to error). A connectionist account supposes that this transition can occur in a single mechanism (in...

Learning the past tense of English verbs using inductive logic programming

This paper presents results on using a new inductive logic programming method called Foidl to learn the past tense of English verbs. The past tense task has been widely studied in the context of the symbolic/connectionist debate. Previous papers have presented results using various neural-network and decision-tree learning methods. We have developed a technique for learning a special type of Pr...

Frequency Effects of Regular Past Tense Forms in English on Native Speakers’ and Second Language Learners’ Accuracy Rate and Reaction Time

There is substantial debate over the mental representation of regular past tense forms in both first language (L1) and second language (L2) processing. Specifically, the controversy revolves around the nature of morphologically complex forms such as the past tense –ed in English and how morphological structures of such forms are represented in the mental lexicon. This study focuses on the resul...
